Changes to Pap Smears in Australia

As of December 1st 2017, the Pap smear test will be called the Cervical Screening Test. The duration between tests is now every 5 years instead of 2 years as the test is more accurate.

Women aged 25 to 74 yrs who are currently or have been sexually active should undergo this screening when they are next due for a Pap smear. This includes women who have had the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine.

When the doctor collects the smear the process is the same; the sample medium is now routinely a liquid that is tested for HPV (the virus that causes cervical cancer).

The test is a simple procedure to check the health of your cervix. It feels the same as the Pap test, but tests for HPV.

Anyone who engages in genital skin to skin contact with a person of any gender can be infected with HPV. Remember, having HPV does not necessarily mean that you or your partner have been unfaithful.

Love yourself, make sure your woman's health check is up to date. To book an appointment with our doctors, click on the "BOOK NOW" button above or contact our friendly receptionists.
